Notes from the floor
Blog
Short takes from the Vesper team on robot programming, automation and getting physical AI onto the factory floor.
- The issue with VLAs You can add touch to a VLA. End-to-end learning is still the wrong shape for a production line: hours of demonstrations per task, a model you cannot open up, and test runs that cannot prove it works.
- Demo vs deployment: October Five robotics results from the past months, read with one question: what would it take to run this on a production line?
- Agents write the program, the robot runs it Ken Goldberg calls it Agentic Robotics, we call it generative robot programming. Coding agents do the thinking before the robot moves, and the result is code a plant can run every shift.
- Why not an AGI brain? Why write robot programs if an AGI brain will do everything from one demonstration? Because manufacturing wants predictable and boring. Put the intelligence in the design phase.
- The deployment gap is an engineering problem Robotics demos look almost solved, most shop floors are still manual. Six gaps sit in between. Three close by choosing the right shape, the other three take engineering and real deployments.
